What is Kratom? All About Mitragyna Speciosa

September 10, 2019 by Phyto

Have you been hearing about a new product called kratom and have no idea what it is? Wondering why so many people seem to be enthralled by this unique product and all that it is has to offer?

Don’t worry; you’re not the only one! Despite the surge of popularity that kratom has seen in recent years, it is still a relatively unknown substance when you look at the entire population. Many people assume that it is something illegal or dangerous, but they would be wrong in doing so.

Today, we’ll be introducing kratom in more detail so that you can get a clear answer about what it is, what it isn’t, and what you should know about this unique botanical. Let’s get started!

Defining Kratom

The first thing that you need to know is what kratom is! Kratom is a plant. Specifically, it is a tree that is native to southern Asia where warm and wet climates help this deciduous tree grow big and strong. There are huge forests of kratom trees in Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and other neighboring regions as well.

Kratom is one of the largest tropical trees; it can tower to heights of over 70 feet when the conditions are optimal. People that are trying kratom, however, are more interested in what kratom has to offer them and not as interested in how tall it can grow!

What’s So Special About The Kratom Tree?

If it’s not the height of the Kratom tree that makes it interesting, what is it that people find attractive about this plant?

Kratom is a kind of tree that is part of the coffee family, and its Latin name is Mitragyna speciosa. There are about seven different trees in this species, but kratom is the most well-known variety. Kratom trees and similar varieties contain what are known as mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Both of these compounds are types of alkaloids, and alkaloids are substances that can have effects on your body. Common alkaloids include the caffeine in coffee or tea and the quinine in tonic water.

In short, kratom tree leaves contain special plant compounds that interact with your body when consumed! No wonder so many people are flocking to buy kratom online.

Why Do People Take Kratom?

Before we get too much deeper into the history of kratom and how it is used, let’s talk about why people are taking it. Does anyone you know use kratom? Have they told you why they are using it?

If you’ve only heard about kratom in passing, you might not yet have a good idea of why there are people that use this botanical daily, if not more frequently.

Most kratom consumers are using this plant because they feel that it helps improve their quality of life and makes their days better. They may have specific issues they hope to address, and different people use kratom for a wide variety of different reasons.

The American Kratom Association has estimated that perhaps 10-15 million people in the United States use kratom every week!

The History of Kratom

Kratom has been used in the areas where it is native for hundreds of years, if not longer. The tree has many traditional and medicinal uses in the areas where it is native, and the local cultures have found ways to incorporate it into their belief systems and rituals for a long time.

Most commonly, Southeast Asian cultures have used kratom leaves in the following ways:

  • • Brewed as a tea
  • • Chewed on the leaves

Today, the kratom leaves are still used in these ways, but it’s more common to see the international populations that are using kratom to grind it into a fine powder before consuming the leaves instead of using the more traditional consumption methods.

Consuming Kratom Today

How do people use the kratom once it is ground into a fine powder? There are a lot of different ways that the kratom can then be consumed, but we’ll briefly introduce the most common methods.

Some people create Kratom tea from the powder; others put the powder into capsules and take it directly. You can even make a tincture with the powder to try a different intake method. Ultimately, the best method for you is going to depend on your taste and your needs, so you will want to try out a few different methods to get it right for you and your body.

The Legal Issue of Kratom

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one big aspect of kratom: its pending legal status. At the time of writing, kratom is still fully legal in most states, though there are some states that are considering restrictions on its use. If you search kratom online, you might even find some articles about the supposed dangers of kratom.

At the same time, you may also know that some states have passed a law that protects both kratom consumers and the kratom industry, requiring reasonable regulation on all kratom products. Look for more states to pass the Kratom Consumer Protection Act in the upcoming legislative session.

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been enough research done about kratom yet, so there are a lot of incorrect or misrepresented stories about kratom out there. Most of the situations covered in these stories were caused by misuse of kratom or by vendors that were selling impure kratom.

Our Stance on Kratom

Here at Phytoextractum, we ensure that all of the products we sell are of the highest quality. We believe it is very important that vendors are held responsible for the quality of their products, and that is why we support the ongoing efforts by the American Kratom Association to encourage all vendors to follow Good Manufacturing Procedures.

We believe that Kratom can be a completely safe and productive botanical as long as it is used, managed, and created responsibly. It is our hope to be able to provide only high-quality and lab tested products to you!

Connect With The Kratom Community At Phyto Herbals In Portland

September 3, 2019 by Phyto

Every year, more and more people become interested in the benefits that plant-based extracts and substances can have on our bodies. From Kratom to mushrooms, there are many substances that are growing in popularity.

As people learn about these products, communities about the best practices for using them, information about different varieties, and even recommendations about vendors form. These communities are a great source of information, and a lot of that information can be found online.

But sometimes, you might want the ability to come and check out some products in person or to engage directly with other Kratom lovers.

And if you happen to be in Portland, you can do just that at our flagship retail location, Phyto Herbals and Accoutrements!

How Retail Stores Can Help You Learn

Though you can buy everything online these days, there’s something special about being able to go into a retail store and engage with the customers and products directly. When you enter a brick-and-mortar store, you’re getting more than just the products you were shopping for.

You’re getting an experience.

Visiting the store gives you a chance to ask all of the questions that you have, hear about the experiences that those in the shops have had with the products, and simply see what sparks your interest when you’re in the store.

We know how convenient shopping online is – we have a whole website devoted to it! But we also know that there is something special about being able to head into a store yourself and simply browse until you make your final choice about what to get.

Meet the Community

If you’re new to CBD, Kratom, and other plant extracts it can be a bit overwhelming to learn more about what there is out there or how people like to use the items that are available. Even after searching online, you might feel like everyone knows more than you’ll ever know, and that can be overwhelming, too!

Walking into a store as a newbie is still going to cause some nerves, but it’s also going to give you the chance to directly meet and interact with friendly members of these communities. People in the community want to help others learn more, but that desire to share can come off too strong online.

In person, you can have the conversations you’ve been hoping to have and ask the questions that you have been wanting to ask without feeling like you’re missing out on something. As you enter the community, you’ll feel engaged and welcome, and that’s what we want for every single person who is ready to learn more!

Other Ways to Get Involved With The Community

If you aren’t located in Portland, feel free to stop by on your next trip!

Otherwise, you’ll have to find other ways to get involved with the community. But don’t be afraid; there are a lot of ways that you could do that!

Forums

There are quite a few different ways that you can find forums. Simply searching online for forums about the specific topic that you are specifically looking for can help you to find a community.

The important thing to remember about online forums is that not everyone is going to be nice all the time! Don’t be afraid to stop talking to people that frustrate you, and be sure to follow any site’s protocols to follow the rules.

Support AKA

Another way to get involved in the community is to check out American Kratom Association’s website. On the website, you can find information about local events, national movements, and other interesting topics. With all of these events, you can find other people who are interested in Kratom or CBD just like you.

Where to Find Phyto Herbals

Phyto Herbals is located on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just north of Fremont Street. If you want the chance to check out all of Phyto’s unique offerings, you can see it in person if you visit the brick-and-mortar location!

The store is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so feel free to stop by at any time!

Retail & Beyond

While we hope that you have the chance to check out Phyto Herbals, we know that not everyone is located in Portland, and even those that are might not have time to make it out to the physical location. We highly recommend it if you can, but we understand that not everyone can do that!

If you can’t, don’t forget that you can shop the catalog online as well. Between the offerings online at Phyto Herbals and here at Phytoextractum, we truly believe that you can find everything you might want to try!

The Trouble With Kratom: What We Can’t Tell You

August 20, 2019 by Phyto

There are many who enjoy kratom on a regular basis but don’t know much about how it actually works. There are others who are curious about trying kratom for the first time, but they can’t find enough reliable information online to really feel confident using it. Why is it that this uncertainty exists around the subject of kratom?

Unfortunately, legality is a big part of why sellers like us cannot say more about kratom when we are marketing our products. While we know a lot about this botanical, how it works, and what it could do for you, we could be breaking the law if we weren’t careful about how we describe and market our product.

Understanding why things are set up like this can be confusing, but the situation doesn’t have to stay like this forever! That’s right; it is possible for this situation to change if the right types of time, money, and effort are put into the world.

Today, we’ll be sharing what we know about the rules that prevent kratom companies like us from discussing certain topics with consumers. Then, we’ll let you know what YOU can do to help this problem improve in the future of the kratom industry.

How The FDA Regulates “Claims” Marketing

There are tons of different rules and regulations that the Food and Drug Administration uses to help protect consumers in America from mislabeled or otherwise dangerous products. Like any other seller on the market, we are liable to follow these regulations.

Generally speaking, the FDA recognizes two types of claims:

  • • Health claims
  • • Structure/function claims
Buy Kratom online at Phytoextractum

What Are Health Claims?

Health claims are a type of claim that specifically links a substance to a disease or health-related condition. Health claims can only be used for drugs that have been approved by the FDA to treat diseases.

In this type of claim, the product is marketed as a specific solution to a problem. For example, allergy eye drops are specifically formulated to contain some ingredients which soothe itchy eyes and are marketed as such. This would fall into the category of a health claim, and the claim would need to be pre-approved by the FDA before any marketing begins.

Saying that eating carrots helps maintain your sense of sight, however, would not be considered a health claim because it is not targeting a specific health condition. This is considered a structure/function claim.

What Are Structure/Function Claims?

The other type of claims that the FDA deals with frequently are the structure/function claims. These claims are more general and talk about how nutrients and ingredients can change or affects the body’s functions.

For example, saying that vitamin A helps improve vision is a structure/function claim.

These types of claims can be added to products in the US without any FDA pre-approval, but the information must be passed to the FDA within 30 days. Additionally, you must have substantial evidence to support your claim. Finally, disclaimers must be added to all packaging to let customers know that the FDA did not review the claims.

The Trouble With Kratom

Now that you have a little bit of background knowledge about how the FDA deals with drug and supplement related approvals, let’s talk about the trouble with kratom.

Kratom is not an FDA-approved drug, therefore it cannot use any health claims. What’s tricky is that the FDA also does not consider kratom to be a supplement, therefore structure/function claims are off limits too.

Health & Structure/Function Claims Do Not Apply

While you can use health claims or structure/function claims to market some products, the same cannot be said about kratom.

In the case of health claims, there is no FDA-supported evidence that kratom has any positive effects at this time. For that reason, the FDA will not pre-approve any statements about kratom to be used as health claims.

In the case of kratom, structure/function claims are also prohibited. While the base compound found in kratom (mitragynine) has been shown to have effects on the body, there is not yet a solid baseline measurement for the body’s natural level. This means that comparing the function of kratom to the body’s normal function is impossible.

And for that reason, we as vendors become severely limited in what we can and cannot say about kratom!

Why We Think This Needs To Be Changed

Ideally, the day will come when we can legally describe the effects that kratom may have, like many other botanicals currently on the market. Unfortunately, there are a lot of barriers to making this happen.

Many vendors have lied, sold dangerous product, or otherwise caused problems within the kratom community over the years. Due to their irresponsibility, reliable vendors like us have to suffer from the negative perception that both members of the general public and the FDA have about kratom.

If the perception of kratom never changes, the bad vendors will never be held accountable, and consumers will be continually put at risk of buying a poorly made, unregulated product.

You Can Be The Change

While there are vendors like us and organizations like the American Kratom Association fighting for our rights to use kratom safely and freely, we can’t do it alone. To truly have an impact on how the kratom industry grows and changes in the future, we need all kratom lovers to join us in pushing back against negative perception.

There are a number of things that we would love for you to do to help us save the future of Kratom from becoming even messier than it already is:

  • • Buy from vendors that are part of the AKA Good Manufacturing Program
  • • Share your stories about kratom online
  • • Reach out to your local legislatures about kratom laws
  • • Encourage the establishment of Kratom Consumer Protection Laws

With your help, we can ensure that kratom remains a safe and legal botanical to use as the years go by!

The Local Search: Figuring Out Where To Buy Kratom Near You

August 6, 2019 by Phyto

Shopping online can be incredibly rewarding. Sometimes, there’s nothing more satisfying than ordering a new outfit for an upcoming event from the comfort of your sofa. Other times, however, the experience can be a bit disconnected.

When shopping online, it’s easy to be unsure about your selections. There’s no associate to ask immediate questions to; there’s no one shopping around nearby that you can chat with about your options. It becomes a very solo experience when it doesn’t need to be.

Buying kratom online is by far the most common way for kratom users to get their supply at this time, but that doesn’t mean that it needs to continue to be the way. In fact, more and more users are looking for ways to get involved in the community. Is it possible that local shops might be the destination of their quest?

Let’s talk a bit more about the pros and cons of where you buy your kratom, and how to find out where kratom is being sold near you!

The Big Bonuses of Buying Kratom IRL

For many that have gotten used to the experience of buying kratom online, you might be thinking, “Why would I want to go to a retail shop?” While it’s true that going to a brick-and-mortar store isn’t going to be a necessary thing for everyone, a lot of people will love these big bonuses.

Bonus #1: Associates

The main reason that visiting a physical store can be very beneficial is that you can get extra help and guidance from the associates working there. They are going to be very familiar with the products in stock, and that means that your questions can be answered immediately.

Most websites have some type of email or chat feature where you can ask questions, but few sites are able to give that type of feedback immediately. When you’re in a store, you can have your answer as soon as you finish asking the question.

Bonus #2: Stock

When you’re shopping at a storefront, you’ll be able to see exactly what type of items there are available to purchase. Browsing menus on a website can be tiresome, especially when you aren’t quite sure what you want.

When in a retail location, you can browse and see what you are most drawn to throughout your searches and conversations. You can even touch certain accessories to see if they would suit your needs or not, and that can help you feel a bit more confident in what you decide to purchase at the end of your visit.

Bonus #3: Community

It’s always great to learn more about locals who are involved in the same things as you are. The same can be said about any hobby as it can be said about kratom: it’s beneficial to be able to learn from those who have different experiences in the same areas as you.

Getting involved with the community will also help you to stay up-to-date with the most recent legal actions being pursued in your area about kratom. With the added knowledge, you will be able to join the fight to keep kratom legal and protect consumers from the damages caused by unreliable vendors.

Finding Your Local Shops

Now that we’ve helped you to understand the potential joys of hitting up a local shop for your next supply of kratom, let’s talk about how to actually go about finding those shops.

Generally, the stores that are most likely to sell kratom products are as follows:

  • • CBD shops
  • • Smoke shops
  • • General health stores
  • • Metaphysical shops

If you can’t find any information about kratom shops by searching the word “kratom” on Google, you may want to search for these types of shops instead. Then, give each shop a call and find out if they have any kratom products in stock.

The areas where you are going to be most likely to find Kratom on sale at retail locations are in those areas where Kratom Consumer Protection Laws have already been implemented. If CBD oil and similar substances are already legal, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find some Kratom.

Are You In Portland?

While we can’t hook you up with a reliable kratom vendor in every city just yet, we can speak with some authority about how great the Phyto: Herbals & Accoutrements retail space that we’ve put together in Portland is!

This store, located on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just north of Fremont Street has a ton of unique offerings. While you can browse the general inventory on our website, the only way to connect and make sure that you see everything that there is to offer is to go into the store yourself!

The store is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm. The address is 3827 NE MLK Blvd, Portland, OR 97212. Make sure to stop by and see us if you’re ever in the area; we’d love to get the chance to know you!

Search For That Shop

Buying local and getting involved in a community that you can physically be part of is always a huge plus. If you have the option to visit stores that act as a hub for kratom users in your area, don’t hesitate to head over there the next time that you need some supplies! Learning from local experts can be an invaluable tool in your kratom experience.

If you don’t have any shops in your area, don’t worry! Buying online from reliable sellers like us here at Phytoextractum is still a great option for you. From there, you may want to try to find an online community group where you can discuss your plans, options, ideas, and more! These types of communities pop up online every day.

The key is that getting involved in the kratom community can make a big difference, so go ahead and do your best to find a way to do just that!

What’s Going On In Thailand: A Tour Guide

July 30, 2019 by Phyto

Thailand is a beautiful and enticing country with a long history. While many people on our site might not know much more about Thailand than that some of their favorite strains of kratom are billed as Thai kratom, there’s a lot more that you could learn!

A popular tourist destination, Thailand is home to many different spots that are very interesting to learn more about. From stunning beaches to rich, cultured history, a tour of Thailand is sure to bring a lot of excitement into your life.

Phytoextractum is going to take you on a personal tour of Thailand today with this custom tour guide. Are you ready to learn more?

Thailand: The Introduction

The first thing that you should get to know are the basics!

There are currently more than 68 million people living in Thailand. While there are big cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai to visit, the 76 regions of Thailand are also dotted with amazing villages and mountain towns that are still very small in size. Like any other country, you can find a variety of types of cities and towns.

The currency currently used in Thailand is the Thai Baht. One USD is equal to about 30 Thai Baht, so you will need to do some conversions on the fly while you are shopping there if you want to know how much something costs.

Finally, Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world. It is just a little bit larger than Spain. Thailand’s weather and environment differ quite a bit in most northern regions when compared to the southern, tropical areas. Depending on what time of year you visit, you may want to consider which region will be most enjoyable to be in.

Visiting Thailand: Timing & Budget

Since we’re talking about the weather, let’s get a bit more in detail about what time of year is the best time of year to visit and how much you can expect to spend when vacationing in Thailand.

Timing

Generally speaking, you will probably want to visit during the winter months. This is because you can avoid the hottest and the wettest weather if you come between December and March!

If you visit between May and October, you’re likely to deal with rainy conditions for a large portion of your trip. Between March and May, the temperature skyrockets into uncomfortable ranges.

For that reason, visiting during the cool season of November to February is usually a better choice to avoid the worst types of weather that happen in Thailand. If you can’t visit in that range, however, don’t worry too much! Thailand is beautiful at any time of year; just make sure that you are prepared to handle the weather conditions that you will find there.

Budget

Another factor that you will want to consider is your budget. How much are you prepared or expecting to spend while in Thailand?

Depending on the type of accommodations that you want to stay in, you’ll need to budget anywhere from $6 to $40. Many hotels cost less than $40 per night unless you want to stay in very high-end suites.

As far as food goes, eating like a local can save you a bunch! Street vendors sell complete meals for less than $2 a meal, and eating at small restaurants usually costs between $5 and $7 for each meal. High-end restaurants come in around $15 to $25 in most cases, and that is still very affordable when compared to other tourist destinations.

Types of Areas To Visit

When people head to Thailand, there are a number of different types of things that they tend to do. We’ve outlined a few different types of trips that you might want to experience while in Thailand!

The Island Adventurer

Many people head to Thailand to relax on a beach, and that can definitely be accomplished in the southern regions of Thailand! Here, you can hit up coastal resorts, island hop to smaller islands, or just hang out on the first beach you find.

We recommend heading to some of the more popular beaches like those near Phuket and then head to a marine reserve or park to get a more pristine, nature-focused beach experience. Beaches in Thailand can be crowded, so visiting both types of locations is a great way to ensure you have a great and balanced experience.

Mountain Regions

The northern region of Thailand is home to the Thai Highlands. These highlands are spotted with mountain villages that are a joy to visit, and there are a lot of outdoor activities that you can take part in when visiting there. Whether you want to go hiking or just hang out in the mountain air, you can do both of these things in northern Thailand.

Temples & History

Thailand has a very rich history, and the temples that scatter the country are some of the most amazing things to see. No matter which area of Thailand you find yourself in, you can be sure that there are some beautiful temples to be soon. Most temples in Thailand are still functioning Buddhist temples as well, so there’s a lot to be learned from the visitation experience.

City Hopper

Don’t forget that Thailand is more than just jungles and beaches. There are many large cities in Thailand that are rich in technology, culture, and nightlife! When visiting a city like Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you can experience the many sides of Thailand in a single location.

Big metropolitan cities can be overwhelming when visiting if you aren’t used to the hustle and bustle, so you will want to take a tour or some extra time to get acclimated to the area when you first arrive. But don’t be afraid because the cities of Thailand are thrilling places to explore!

Thailand: More Than Just Kratom

As you can see, there is a lot more to learn about in Thailand than just kratom. While kratom does play a part in Thailand’s working history, the day-to-day life of the country doesn’t necessarily rely on kratom.

Tourists who visit Thailand are met with a beautiful and culture-heavy society where you can immerse yourself in a colorful, wondrous world unlike anything else you’ve ever known!

3 Tips For Talking About Kratom

July 9, 2019 by Phyto

So you’ve discovered the world of kratom. You’ve enjoyed your experiences so far, but you’re hungry to learn more. Beyond that, you’re eager to share the wonders of kratom with others, but you aren’t sure how to approach talking about what many still see as a taboo area.

Like the early days of CBD oil and similar products, figuring out the best ways to talk about kratom so that you can accurately and honestly describe your experiences can be hard. What can you say even when the legal status of kratom can be a bit hard to describe?

At Phytoextractum, we are dedicated to ensuring that kratom consumers will be protected for decades to come. A big part of accomplishing that goal lies in advocacy. Today, we’ll help you learn how to become one of kratom’s best advocates by talking about it in the right ways.

Tip #1: Get Educated

Before you even try to talk about kratom with someone else to help them get an idea of what this product is like, you need to learn more about kratom yourself. Sure, you already know that you like it and that you think they might, too, but will you be able to answer their questions?

If they want to know how it works with your body to have various effects, can you explain the science of how it might work? Or would you be filling their mind with ideas rather than truths?

When it comes to kratom, we need to avoid creating or spreading any more misinformation than is already out there. Trying to educate someone about kratom when you know very little about the scientific, historical, and legal details of kratom yourself may cause more harm than good.

Before you start talking about or advocating for kratom with others, be sure you have the tools that you need. Get familiar with the following before you open that flood gate:

  • • Kratom’s history
  • • Where kratom comes from
  • • How scientists believe kratom works
  • • How to find a reputable vendor and make sure you’re getting safe products

These are just four basic things that every kratom user should be learning about kratom anyway, but knowing these things is even more important when you are going to be suggesting another person give kratom a try.

Knowledge is power. With more knowledge about kratom, you’ll be able to do a better job of sharing your feelings about it with others.

Buy Kratom online at Phytoextractum

Tip #2: Don’t Push The Limits

Remember that not everyone is going to be interested in what you’ve gained from kratom or what you have to offer. And that’s okay!

For many, the misinformation they’ve already heard about kratom and its constantly changing legal status can be too much of a barrier to overcome. While they may come to be interested in kratom once it is more clearly on the “approved” side of the law, there is no reason to push them to be interested now.

After all, what you want to do is help kratom to have a more positive image in the public eye. Pressuring people about kratom is only going to make kratom appear more dangerous than it is!

Pay attention to how much people care when you are sharing your kratom experience. If someone is engaged and asking questions, keep going! If, however, they seem a bit hesitant and are focused on the legality more than anything else, consider pointing out the current legal status of kratom and moving on.

It’s not a win-lose situation when talking about kratom. Instead, think of it as an ideas meeting where you’re sharing what you’ve got, but where there doesn’t need to be any official outcome or decision at the end of it.

Tip #3: Offer Resources In Addition To Stories

Even people who trust their friends and family often need more solid proof of something existing or working before they believe it. This is the case for many different issues, and the same can be said for kratom.

If you’re talking about someone and they have a lot of questions about how to use kratom or how it works, give some information about how it figures into your life. Sharing our stories can be a powerful way to connect with other people and to pass along important insights through personal experience.

But, don’t be surprised if someone is looking for more solid evidence than anecdotal info. In that case, you might say:

  • • “You seem really interested. Can I recommend a blog with great articles that can help you get a better understanding of kratom?”
  • • “Do you want me to send you the kratom advocacy group so you can learn more?”
  • • “Here’s a reputable online vendor; why don’t you check out the info on their site?”
  • • “Let’s go to my favorite kratom shop together sometime; you can learn a lot from the people there, too.”

It’s almost always a good idea to offer someone more than just stories when you are teaching them about something outside of their comfort zone. Knowledge will help them feel more secure in their interest, so setting them up with a way to get more of that knowledge at their own pace is one of the best things that you can do for someone.

Kratom: A Gift to Share

If kratom has changed the course of your life, it’s only natural that you’ll want to share more about the experience you’ve had with everyone who expresses any interest in kratom. But remember, simply rambling about kratom to someone for hours isn’t going to be the best way to deliver your information.

Instead, consider taking a gentle yet educational approach when you are talking to someone new about kratom. The balance between their personality and your words will create a lot of the person’s first impression of kratom, so it is important to consider your tread carefully and to try to follow their lead.
