Kratom Ban Passes in Louisiana: Your Voice Is Needed

May 28, 2025 by Phyto

In a deeply concerning turn of events for Kratom supporters, Louisiana lawmakers have approved a bill that would fully ban the sale, possession, and use of Kratom throughout the state. With commanding majorities in both chambers—86–6 in the House and 26–11 in the Senate—the bill now heads to Governor Jeff Landry’s desk for final approval.

This means Louisiana is just one step away from becoming the next state to prohibit Kratom entirely. Unless Governor Landry vetoes or delays the bill, it could be signed into law within days.

Why the Rush to Ban Kratom?

“We are losing our babies. We are losing our children.”
— Rep. Debbie Villio (R-Kenner)

Bill supporters, such as Rep. Debbie Villio and Sen. Jay Morris, claim that Kratom is dangerous, addictive, and marketed irresponsibly. Villio referred to the botanical as “gas station heroin” and criticized vendors for making what she alleged are misleading health-related statements. She pushed for swift passage of the ban, citing public health concerns—despite a lack of conclusive evidence or regulatory oversight from federal agencies.

Meanwhile, Rep. Peter Egan (R-Covington) pushed back, highlighting the responsible use of Kratom by over 300,000 Louisiana residents, many of whom rely on the natural leaf for everyday wellness and quality of life. He proposed amendments to preserve access to pure, unaltered Kratom—but these were ultimately rejected.

“People who use the natural leaf just want to function, to feel okay. That’s all.”
— Rep. Peter Egan

The Broader Implications: Industry at a Crossroads

The last time we saw a state try to pass an outright ban on Kratom was back in 2017. Since then, the Kratom community has made great strides by working with lawmakers to develop thoughtful regulation through initiatives like the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA). The Louisiana ban threatens to undo that progress.

This is no longer a local issue—it’s a national one. If this bill is enacted, it could ignite similar efforts in other states. The Kratom community cannot afford to stay silent. Every voice counts in the ongoing fight to protect access to safe, lab-tested Kratom.

What’s even more troubling is that Senator Jay Morris, the architect behind this bill, has accepted notable contributions from pharmaceutical lobbying groups. These groups have historically opposed Kratom and other natural supplements that could disrupt their market share. It’s important to recognize the potential conflict of interest and question whose interests this legislation truly serves.
