Marshmallow is a blossoming individual from the family Althaea. The leaf of this Eurasian plant has a long history of archived use by the antiquated Romans, Greeks and Chinese. Marshmallow can be used in many different preparations and is often found in teas and poultices.
Aside from traditional herbal medicine use, it was often used to flavor foods and beverages in culinary dishes. All parts of the plant are edible, although the most fibrous parts of the plant should be used in a decoction for best results. There are recipes dating back to ancient Egyptian times, where they would create candies made with the marshmallow root.
Not only are marshmallow leaves consumed in foods and herbal teas, but they are a common base for herbal cigarettes. The flavor is often described as smooth and calming. Try blending it with other herbs such as Damiana or Mullein to see what blend is right for you.
