Sophora subprostrata was first recorded in the Kaibao Bencao (973 A.D.) and is native to elevations of 1000 - 2000 metres in Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan Provinces of China   Rich in alkaloids and other scientifically interesting compounds, traditional use of this plant vary.  This plant has been reported to have a history of medicinal use in China and Asia.  Other names include Sophora tetraptera and Sophora tonkinensis
