The mushroom develops naturally as a fungus on the bark of the cinnamon tree Cinnamomum kanehirai, which grows at high altitudes in the mountains of Taiwan. The fruit of the mushroom is more bioactive, but only reaches full maturity after the host tree is dead. That led to the destruction of many of the trees in Taiwan, cut down to foster full growth of the prized mushroom fruit. The tree is now protected by law in Taiwan, but several methods of commercial cultivation have been developed that still produce the beneficial bioactive compounds in the mushroom without further destruction of the cinnamon tree species.
